Abbotts wins match play championship
Beats pro in South Dakota club event

Former Owen Sounder Brett Abbotts defeated a Dakotas Tour professional to win the match play championship at his home club in South Dakota in September.
Abbotts, who graduated in the spring from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, claimed a 4&2 victory over tour pro Jeff Meyerink at Lakeview Golf Course.
Not having played in a week and a half, Abbotts got off to a slow start and was 4 down through 5 holes. But he turned it around and shot eight under par for the rest of the round, finishing with a 65. That's only three shots off the course record he set at the course earlier this year.
"It was a pretty thrilling victory," Abbotts said in an email message. It was also his closest match as the others were 7&5, 5&3, 8&7 and 4&2.
It's his second win this summer. After a highly successful college career, Abbotts teamed up with Brett Coluccio of Springfield, Missouri to win the South Dakota Golf Assocation's Two Man State Championship in June.
After graduating, Abbotts landed a job as Grade 5/6 teacher in the White Lake School District west of Mitchell. He's also helping to coach the school's volleyball and basketball teams.
