Chris Hargest of Owen Sound fired a final round score of 70 (-1) to give Niagara College its first gold medal in men's individual golf at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championship.
The first-year Business Administration student had a three-round score of 213 (73, 70, and 70) that allowed him to finish on top of the field of 96 golfers from colleges across Canada.
The 19-year-old left-handed golfer finished at even par and 1 shot ahead of Ryan Willoughby from Humber College (Toronto, ON) and 2 shots ahead of Phil Kondrak from Mount Royal College (Calgary, AB).
The Niagara Knights Men's team finished 1 shot back of gaining a bronze medal. Their combined score of 898 gave them a fourth place finish.
The tournament was held Oct. 13-16 at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor.
The victory is a spectacular finish to a great fall season for Hargest, who won the Stone Tree Amateur in Owen Sound for the third time this summer before heading off to college.
He also won his second college event, the Durham Invitational in Whitby, and drained a key putt to help his team win the season-opening event Fanshawe Invitational in London, Ont.
At the Ontario Colleges Athletic Assocation championship on Oct. 5-7 at Lochness Links in Welland, he finished 6th to lead his team, which ended up 5th in Division 1.
