Chippewa
In the A Flight where the competition took place for the club championship at Chippewa Golf and Country Club, Jerry Thomson started the second day of play with a five-stroke lead over Brian Acton and held this lead after the front nine. Going into the back nine, the other contenders were also several strokes back. On the first four holes on the back nine, Acton went two under par while Thomson was two over par, and the lead had shrunk to one stroke. On the fifteenth hole, Thomson took a double bogey while Acton parred the hole, giving Acton a one-stroke lead. But on sixteen, Thomson drained a thirty-foot putt for birdie to tie the match up. Acton regained the lead on seventeen with a par while Thomson bogeyed, but Thomson tied Acton on the last hole of play with a par to Acton's bogey. On the first sudden death playoff hole, Acton played safe, hitting an iron in front of the lake on the relatively short par four. Thomson hit a driver left of the lake, but was blocked out by a tree and had to run a low chip under it. His third shot came up short of the pin, leaving him about 14 feet for par. Meanwhile, Acton pitched his second shot over the green into the rough, but his comeback chip stopped about a foot from the hole. Thomson missed his par putt, and Acton dropped his putt to win the championship. The following are results from the Aug. 22-23 championship. Club Champion - Brian Acton 78 - 74 - total 152. Owen Sound
A birdie putt from about 50 feet that ran around the edge of the hole before dropping in helped Phil Carleton secure his first club championship at Owen Sound Golf and Country Club. The pivotal shot came on the par-3 17th hole and represented a three-shot swing as Chad Currie, the leader after two days of the three-day championship, double-bogeyed the hole. That left Carleton with a four-shot lead over Currie going into the final hole. He ended up bogeying the 18th, but finished three ahead of Currie (75-72-74) and two ahead of defending club champion Steve Irving (73-75-72). Carleton, who shot 73-75-70 (+5), has lost twice in a playoff in his 10 years of competing in the club championship. He said it was a relief to finally win. He has played in a Canadian Mid-Amateur championship, the Ontario Mid-Amateur and other provincial events, but he ranks the club championship as one of his greatest achievements because there are so many "championship quality" players at the club. He also said the accomplishment would not have been possible without the help he has received over the years from fellow club members like Irving, Bob Nichols & Doug David (the A Flight net winner with a net 214). The B Flight winner was Pierre Wade, who shot 75-85-81 for a 4-shot victory over Nichols (80-88-77). Alex Harvey was the net winner with a net 211. Stig Lassen shot rounds of 74-72 to win his third men's club championship on Aug. 15-16 at Saugeen Golf Club. The 47-year-old Port Elgin resident was five shots off the lead after the first day and was just looking to move up the leaderboard on the final day. However, his even-par 72 gave him a one-stroke victory over past champion Tyler Smith, who shot 69 on the opening day but ballooned to 78 on Day 2. Smith's final round included a quadruple bogey on Legacy's par-3 eighth hole. The victory for Lassen was a nice reward for his hard work on his golf game in recent years. "I tried to change my swing a few years ago and that set me back and after a lot of hard work it's finally coming back," he said. "It's good to see something come out of all the hard work."
