Strong finish for Schmidt
Personal best at national championship

Kincardine's Taylor Schmidt ended her local golf season on a high note, breaking a course record - even it was only for one day - grabbing the first round lead and turning in a personal best performance in the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship in New Brunswick. Schmidt shot rounds of 71-81-80-79 to finish 15th at the Aug. 4-7 event at Hampton Golf Club in Moncton. It was her best result ever in a national championship. The biggest thrill came on the first day when she shot two-under to set the new course record for females and take the lead. She shattered the record by two strokes and what's even more impressive is the fact that the previous record of 73 was shot from the front tees. The junior girls played about three quarters of the course from the tips and the rest from the front tees, a total yardage of 6,100 yards. One of the holes was a 596-yard par 5 that plays as a par 6 for members. In recent years Schmidt has set course records for females at four Grey-Bruce courses - Meaford G & CC, Stone Tree Golf and Fitness Club, BlackHorse Golf and Country Resort and Kincardine G & CC. During her record round in New Brunswick she hit 10 of 14 fairways but only 10 greens in regulation. The key, according to her father, was getting it up and down and putting well (she only took 25 putts). However thrilling the record was, it didn't last long as Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Quebec City shot 68 the next day to set the new standard. The event was won by Jennifer Kirby of Brantford, Ont. who shot rounds of 72-75-71-72 for a -2 total. Kincardine's Brianna Cooper, who plays out of BlackHorse Golf and Country Resort, shot 81-80-78-77 to tie for 23rd. The 17-year-old finished in a tie for 22nd at last year's championship. The Royale Cup was Schmidt's final event before heading to the University of Oklahoma where she has accepted a full golf scholarship. Cooper, who has one more year of high school, is hoping to follow the same route by landing a scholarship at a U.S. college next year.
