Gretzky pleased with 2009 event
Narrowly misses winning celebrity/pro division

2009 Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic winner Roger Tambellini with Catriona LeMay Doan, winner of the celebrity/pro competition, and Gretzky.
Tournament host Wayne Gretzky narrowly lost the celebrity/pro team event but he still had lots to smile about after wrapping up another successful Nationwide Tour event at The Georgian Bay Club near Thornbury. "We got luckier with the weather this year, we had a great turnout, the golf was good and I think everyone had a good time," he said. Gretzky played with Canadian pro Derek Gillespie, winner of $100,000 on the Golf Channel's Big Break PEI show. They lost in a tiebreaker to Olympic speed skating champion Catriona Le May Doan and pro Derek Lamley of Fort Myers, Florida. Gretzky said it was fun "to be in the hunt" in the team competition and it was also great to have his son Ty in contention as well. Ty, who will play golf at Arizona State University in the fall, was partnered with Danny Wax of California. They finished in a tie for 6th. Wax, who just graduated from college and was given an exemption to play in the event, shot -9 for the week and ended up finishing in a tie for 17th. He also earned his first golf paycheque - $12,000 - and by virtue of his finish qualifies for the next Nationwide event. While there was talk last year about making the Gretzky Classic a permanent stop on the Nationwide Tour, Gretzky said with the state of the economy right now they will be "taking it year to year." "The volunteers have rallied around this event and made it something special and unique and our plan is to be back next year," he said.
