Impressive Debut
Dean Girodat ties for 11th at Ontario championship
Dean Girodat made his debut at the Men's Champion of Champions event a good one, shooting 75 (+4) at the Donalda Club in North York to finish in a tie for 11th. The champion from Buck's Crossing - a nine-hole course in Hanover - finished 5 shots behind Richard Ross of Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club and David Bryne of Sutton Creek Golf and Country Club, who tied for first (Bryne won in a playoff). Girodat, a 26-year-old machinist who lives in Hanover, said he wasn't intimidated by the field of 91 club champions from across Ontario even though he was representing a small 9-hole course and it was his first provincial event. "I just felt like I had to play well to show I belonged," he said. He had a great front nine, shooting 33 (-3) with four birdies over a seven-hole stretch. Things were going so well, he said, that he started thinking about winning and that's when he ran into trouble. In addition to winning the men's club championship at Buck's Crossing last year, Girodat also won the same title at BlackHorse Golf and Country Resort. The next best result among Grey-Bruce golfers was a tie for 14th by Mike Jackson, who plays out of Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club and The Georgian Bay Club near Thornbury. He shot 76. Steve Irving of Owen Sound Golf & Country Club shot 81 to tie for 42nd, Jack Northey of Saugeen Golf Club shot 86 to tie for 72nd and Reg MacDonald of Cobble Beach Golf Links fired a 94 to finish 87th.
