Local golfer wins provincial championship
Schmidt tops field at Champions event
Brighton, ON - Taylor Schmidt of Kincardine Golf and Country Club delivered a one-stroke victory over defending champion Brittany Marchand at the Golf Association of Ontario's Women's Champion of Champions event at Timber Ridge Golf Club on May 25. Schmidt's three over par 74 topped the strong field of Ontario club champions including World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit, defending Ontario Senior Women's Champion Ivy Steinberg, and 2008 champion Marchand, 16, of Brampton Golf Club. The pairing of Schmidt, the 2008 silver medalist, with Marchand proved to be an interesting contest as the duo battled it out in blustery conditions. "The weather was definitely a factor today, but my playing group made a big difference in the result," said Schmidt, 18. "Brittany and I really pushed each other throughout the entire round." The victory marks Schmidt's first Ontario Provincial Championship as she gears up for a busy tournament season before reporting to the University of Oklahoma in August for a full four-year golf scholarship. For the second consecutive year, the top three finishers were all under the age of 20. Sharing second place with Marchand is LaSalle native Jackie DeMarco, 19, of Essex Golf and Country Club, who closed out her round at 75. Streit, of York Downs Golf and Country Club, carded a 78 to finish tied for sixth place while Steinberg, of Granite Golf Club, finished seven back in ninth place.
