Chantry Island Lighthouse, located just over a mile southwest of Southampton, has the distinction of being one of only six Imperial Lighthouses built on the Great Lakes. It began operation in 1859 and at that time sperm whale oil fuelled the light. Once on the island, you will be treated to a tour of the lighthouse, the lightkeeper's home and the restored gardens. The island is a Canadian Wildlife Service migratory bird sanctuary, home to more than 10,000 pairs of mating birds. |
